Analog equalizers, such as the Pultec EQP-1A and Neve 1073, have helped define the sound of entire eras of music production. Their sonic fingerprints continue to influence how engineers and producers shape tone, warmth, and clarity. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to such gear, these units are rare, expensive, and often reserved for high-end studios.
Over the past few days, I’ve been diving deep into this idea. I took on the challenge of researching the most iconic analog EQs and recreating their signature curves using one of the most precise and flexible digital EQs available today: FabFilter Pro-Q 4.
Utilizing some of the new features included in the latest version, such as surgical control and an intuitive workflow, as well as powerful new features like Character Mode and Gain-Q interaction, Pro-Q 4 is more than capable of replicating the sound of those legendary circuits.
In this article, I’ll explain how I recreated these vintage analog EQ curves as Fabfilter Pro-Q4 Presets, band by band and EQ by EQ, so that you can bring a touch of analog soul into your modern mix.
1. Pultec EQP-1A Emulation (“The Pultec Trick”)
Signature Sound: The Pultec EQP-1A is renowned for its unique ability to simultaneously boost and attenuate the same low-frequency band, particularly at 60Hz or 100Hz. This trick creates a resonant bump that adds weight and roundness while simultaneously carving out muddiness.
The high-frequency shelf is equally famous, adding a silky, expansive air without sounding harsh or artificial. Its tube-driven circuitry contributes rich harmonic coloration that enhances musicality, even with generous EQ moves.
Typical Use: This EQ is a go-to for adding deep, smooth body to bass tracks, giving kick drums a satisfying thump, or adding polished high-end to vocals and complete mixes.
On drum buses, it’s often used to glue the low end while subtly brightening cymbals. It also excels on stereo mixes, where a subtle lift in the lows and highs can enhance the overall vibe without sounding processed.
Pro-Q 4 Settings:
- Low-end Boost (60Hz): Bell filter, Gain +5 dB, Q 0.7
- Low-end Attenuation (60Hz): Bell filter, Gain -3.5 dB, Q 0.5
- Character Mode: Warm
- Processing Mode: Natural Phase

2. Neve 1073 Style EQ
Signature Sound: The Neve 1073 is celebrated for its bold, musical tone with rich harmonic content, especially in the midrange. What makes the 1073 stand out is its ability to add presence and warmth without sounding exaggerated or artificial.
The EQ curves are broad and forgiving, and the high shelf around 10, 12 kHz imparts an unmistakably smooth “air” that enhances clarity and articulation.
When driven, its transformer-balanced Class A circuitry introduces subtle saturation and color that can make vocals and instruments sound more alive and energetic. It doesn’t just EQ, it enhances the character of the source.
Typical Use: The Neve 1073 is a studio staple for vocals, adding body, smoothness, and presence that helps a vocal sit upfront in the mix. It’s equally powerful on snare drums, providing punch and crack while maintaining warmth.
On electric guitars, it brings out upper harmonics and detail, often used to shape both rhythm and lead tones. Whether you’re tracking or mixing, its curves are designed to flatter the source with minimal effort.
Pro-Q 4 Settings:
- 80Hz Shelf (low-end warmth): Low Shelf, Gain +3 dB, Q 0.9
- 360Hz Bell (midrange push): Bell, Gain +2 dB, Q 1.2
- 10-12 kHz Shelf (airy top-end): High Shelf, Gain +4 dB, Q 0.6
- Character Mode: Subtle or Warm (if you need more saturation)
- Processing Mode: Natural Phase
Tip: The Neve sound is all about presence and depth. If your vocals or snare get a bit harsh, use a dynamic bell around 3-5 kHz to tame peaks without dulling the track. You can also experiment with mid/side processing to preserve the vocal’s clarity in the center while opening up the stereo image in the highs.
3. API 550A/550B Curve
Signature Sound: The API 550A and 550B are legendary for their aggressive, punchy tone and musical simplicity. What sets them apart is their Proportional Q design, which means the bandwidth narrows as you apply more gain.
This results in highly focused boosts that cut through a mix without sounding harsh or surgical. The 550A features three bands with fixed frequency selections, while the 550B adds a fourth band for more flexibility.
Their op-amp and transformer circuitry contribute a characteristic forwardness and midrange clarity, often described as “in your face” without being fatiguing. They’re ideal for tracks that need to leap out of the speakers.
Typical Use: API EQs shine on percussive and transient-heavy material. On drums, they add knock and definition, helping snares crack and kicks punch without adding mud. On electric bass and guitars, they add articulation and drive, making them staples in rock and pop production.
The tight low-end control and crisp high-frequency boosts make them especially useful for mixes where clarity and impact are priorities.
Pro-Q 4 Settings:
- 100Hz Bell (tight low-end): Bell, Gain +3 dB, Q 1.0
- 1.5 kHz Bell (presence zone): Bell, Gain +2.5 dB, Q 1.1
- 5kHz Bell (brightness): Bell, Gain +3 dB, Q 1.3
- Character Mode: Clean
- Processing Mode: Zero Latency
Tip: When emulating API-style EQ, don’t be shy with your boosts; this sound thrives on bold moves. Try pushing the upper mids to give guitars or vocals some bite, or the low end to make drums sound more pronounced. A little “API-style” curve can instantly bring energy and attack to the source if you’re working on a rock mix and something feels too soft.
4. SSL 4000 E/G Console EQ
Signature Sound: The SSL 4000 E and G series console EQs are renowned for their crisp, assertive tone and mix-ready precision. Designed for high-end commercial studios in the late 1970s and 1980s, these EQs became synonymous with punchy rock drums, clean pop vocals, and polished, radio-ready mixes.
The E-Series EQ is known for its aggressive, edgy character, especially in the midrange, while the G-Series EQ offers smoother curves and a slightly more refined top end. Both feature a 4-band EQ section with variable Q and switchable bell/shelf modes for the high and low bands, allowing surgical cuts and musical boosts in one unit.
These EQs are not subtle; engineers often describe them as having a “mix glue” quality that locks tracks into place without needing much extra processing. The midrange adds clarity and presence to dense arrangements, while the low and high bands help tighten and brighten a full mix.
Typical Use: SSL EQs are often used on complete drum kits, enhancing the punch and detail of each element. Kick and snare benefit from precise low-end sculpting and midrange snap, while overheads and rooms gain controlled brightness.
On pop vocals, the SSL curve brings articulation and sheen without overwhelming the midrange. Due to their clean, responsive nature, many engineers also rely on SSL-style EQs for final mix shaping on the stereo bus.

- 120Hz Bell (tight low end): Bell, Gain -2 dB, Q 1.1
- 500Hz Bell (mud control): Bell, Gain -3 dB, Q 1.3
- 3kHz Bell (presence): Bell, Gain +2.5 dB, Q 1.0
- 8kHz High Shelf (air): High Shelf, Gain +3 dB, Q 0.9
- Character Mode: Clean or Subtle
- Processing Mode: Natural Phase
Tip: Use SSL-style curves as a surgical tone-shaping tool, cutting 500Hz often clears up boxiness, while a boost at 3kHz adds focus and clarity. In FabFilter Pro-Q 4, you can go a step further by using the EQ Match feature to analyze a commercial mix and apply a similar tonal curve to your track. This is especially powerful when working on pop, EDM, or commercial rock mixes where every element must shine in a competitive frequency space. For even more authenticity, try pairing these settings with gentle compression to emulate the full SSL channel strip behavior.
5. Trident A Range EQ
Signature Sound: The Trident A-Range is a legendary EQ known for its vibrant tone, musical character, and unmistakable vintage charm. Unlike surgical EQs, the A Range features fixed-frequency bands with broad, gentle curves that add color and energy rather than clinical precision. Its lush, high-end is particularly revered, imparting a sweet, open top that flatters vocals, guitars, and synths alike.
The low and mid bands add warmth and presence without harshness, making the A Range a favorite for producers looking to infuse their tracks with analog richness and tonal depth.
The original A Range consoles were rare, only 13 were ever built, and their EQ sections became legendary due to their use on iconic recordings at Trident Studios in London. Engineers loved the EQ’s ability to make tracks sound more alive and musical without over-processing.
Typical Use: The A Range is a go-to for anything that needs to stand out in a mix while maintaining natural musicality. It’s especially effective on lead vocals, electric guitars, and analog synths, adding clarity and brightness without sounding brittle.
Its wide Q curves make it ideal for enhancing entire instruments or buses rather than targeting surgical frequency zones. The A Range EQ is often used to “paint” with sound, bringing character and emotion into a mix.
Pro-Q 4 Settings:
- 80Hz Shelf: Low Shelf, Gain +2.5 dB, Q 0.7
- 1kHz Bell: Bell, Gain +1.5 dB, Q 0.8
- 300Hz Bell: Bell, Reduce with 1dB, Q 0.7
- 5kHz Shelf: High Shelf, Gain +4 dB, Q 1.0
- Character Mode: Warm
Tip: To emulate the smooth, wide curves of the A Range, use moderate boosts and wide Q values. Avoid extreme precision here, this EQ is all about broad strokes and musical coloration. Try placing it on vocals to add top-end sparkle and body simultaneously, or on guitars to bring out clarity and warmth. For even more analog flavor, combine these curves with subtle saturation or harmonic excitement in your chain.
6. Helios Type 69 EQ
Signature Sound: The Helios EQ is famous for its aggressive upper mids, tight low-end, and open high frequencies, making it a go-to for rock vocals, drums, guitars, and punchy mixes. Unlike other EQs of its era, the Helios was designed with a strong personality, it brings color, attitude, and energy to any source it touches. Its upper-mid push makes it perfect for helping instruments cut through dense mixes, while its transformer-based design adds subtle saturation and tonal weight. This EQ doesn’t just shape tone, it enhances musical presence and brings a track to life.
Often described as “gritty but sweet,” the Helios Type 69 became a secret weapon for producers in the ’70s British rock scene. Whether used on drums, vocals, or guitars, it introduced a clarity and edge that defined the era’s sound.
Typical Use: The Helios EQ is most often used on electric guitars, lead vocals, and snare drums, especially in rock and classic pop productions. It’s excellent at adding bite and presence to guitar tones, giving snares a crisp crack, and making vocals sit right in front of the mix. It can also work wonders on overheads and room mics when you want to emphasize the natural openness of the recording.
Pro-Q 4 Settings:
- 60Hz Bell: Bell, Gain +2 dB, Q 0.9
- 700Hz Bell: Bell, Gain -1.5 dB, Q 1.1
- 10kHz High Shelf: High Shelf, Gain +5 dB, Q 0.7
- Character Mode: Warm
Tip: Helios-style EQ is perfect when a track needs to jump out of a crowded mix. Boosting at 10 kHz adds sparkle without sounding harsh, and a slight cut at 700 Hz helps clean up honkiness or congestion. This EQ shines in parallel processing chains, try duplicating your vocal or snare track, applying the Helios-style curve to the duplicate, and blending it in for extra energy and vibe without overwhelming the original source.
7. Manley Massive Passive (Mastering Style)
Signature Sound: The Manley Massive Passive is a high-end passive equalizer known for its smooth, transparent, and musical tone shaping. Designed with mastering in mind, it features broad EQ curves that gently enhance the overall tonal balance of a mix without introducing harshness or artifacts. It’s a passive filter network, followed by tube amplification, that allows for subtle enhancements that sound incredibly natural, even when pushed. The EQ shapes are non-interactive and overlapping, allowing engineers to sculpt multiple areas of the spectrum without phase issues.
This EQ is not about radical tone shaping or surgical correction. It’s about polishing a mix with elegant precision and a touch of analog warmth. It’s particularly loved for its ability to open up the high end and tighten the lows in an almost intangible but clearly audible way.
Typical Use: The Massive Passive is a favorite in mastering chains, where subtle tonal shifts can dramatically improve a track’s cohesiveness and clarity. It’s often used to apply gentle lifts or cuts across wide frequency ranges on the stereo bus, adding depth, air, or warmth without sounding processed. It’s also a great choice for balancing complex arrangements where traditional EQ moves might introduce harshness or imbalance.
Pro-Q 4 Settings:
- Mid Range: Frequency 800Hz, Gain +3.5 dB
- High-end Tilt: Tilt Shelf, Frequency 15 kHz, Gain +2 dB
- Wide Mid (1.5 kHz): Bell, Gain -1 dB, Q 0.7
- Character Mode: Warm
- Processing Mode: Linear Phase (Medium)
Tip: To emulate the Massive Passive’s elegant tonal shaping, use gentle boosts and very wide Q values. The goal here isn’t to fix problems but to enhance the overall feel and dimension of the mix. Using Linear Phase mode in Pro-Q 4 ensures clean, phase-free mastering moves, and subtle gain adjustments will go a long way. Pair this EQ curve with light multiband compression or stereo widening to add finishing touches to a mix before final output.
While no digital EQ can exactly clone the harmonic behavior of analog gear, FabFilter Pro-Q 4 gives you the tools to closely emulate the curves, response, and tonal essence of these classic EQs.
