Over the years of mixing and mastering, I have developed a method for setting up a compressor called “The Prediction Method.” If audio compression still seems complicated to you, you will see that everything has logic, and you will understand when and how to use audio compression and how to use your compressor(s).
This approach involves setting the ratio first, allowing you to predict and anticipate how the compressor will work throughout the rest of the audio compression process.
This method ensures that the compression applied to the audio is intentional and tailored to the specific needs of the mix. Let’s explore “The Prediction Method” step-by-step for effective audio compression.
Predict, Apply, Perfect!
Step 1: Set the Ratio

The first and most important step in my method is setting the ratio. The ratio determines how much the signal is reduced once it exceeds the threshold, providing a foundation for how the compressor will interact with the audio.
In this tutorial, I will showcase the FabFilter Pro-C2, one of the best compressor plugins, thanks to its excellent features and outstanding sound quality. It is perfect for applying this technique. It helps me achieve precise compression in mixing and mastering, though you can use any other compressor plugins you prefer.
By setting the ratio first, I will know how gentle or aggressive the compression will act.
- Low Ratios (1.5:1 to 2:1): These are used for gentle compression, maintaining the audio’s natural dynamics.
- Moderate Ratios (3:1 to 4:1): For general-purpose compression, for adding cohesion without being too aggressive.
- High Ratios (6:1 and above): These are used for aggressive compression when you need to control dynamics tightly, such as on a rap, hip-hop, or rock vocal track or a drum bus.
Example: I might start with a 2:1 ratio for a smooth and cohesive vocal mix and a 6:1 ratio for punchy, controlled vocal compression. I do not recommend working with ratios higher than 10:1 unless it is about parallel compression, which is another story…
Step 2: Set the Threshold

Once the ratio is set, the next step is to adjust the threshold. Adjusting the threshold after the ratio allows you to control the exact point at which the compressor engages, shaping the signal’s dynamic response.
- Low Threshold: More of the signal will be compressed, which is helpful for consistent dynamics control.
- High Threshold: Only the peaks will be compressed, preserving more natural dynamics.
Example: For gentle compression on a mix bus or mastering, start with a 2:1 ratio to engage lightly on the louder parts of the track. The threshold might be lower for aggressive compression with a 6:1 ratio to catch more signal peaks (as in vocal compression).
Step 3: Adjust the Attack

The attack time controls how quickly the compressor responds to signals that exceed the threshold. Setting the attack after the ratio and threshold allows you to fine-tune how the compressor handles transients, ensuring the desired initial impact is preserved or controlled.
- Fast Attack: Quickly clamps down on peaks, which is helpful in controlling transient-heavy material like drums, electric guitars, or rap vocals.
- Slow Attack: Allows transients to pass through before compression, preserving the sound’s initial impact.
Example: For a drum track with a ratio of 4:1 and a moderate threshold, a fast attack (1-5 ms) might be appropriate to control transients and tame sharp snare or cymbal hits. For a vocal with a ratio of 6:1, a slower attack (10-30 ms) can help preserve the natural punch and presence while still managing peaks.
Step 4: Adjust the Release

The release time determines how quickly the compressor stops compressing after the signal falls below the threshold. Imagine the release time as a submarine resurfacing after a deep dive. When the submarine starts to rise (like when compression is applied), the speed at which it resurfaces is crucial.
If the release is too fast, the compressed audio can feel too abrupt or unnatural, creating pumping effects in the mix. If the release time is slow, it lets the audio breathe naturally, ensuring smooth and musical dynamics. In both cases, the key is finding the right balance to maintain smoothness and prevent sudden shifts in volume that could disrupt the natural flow.
- Fast Release (50-100 ms): The compressor stops compressing quickly, which helps keep the dynamics lively.
- Slow Release (200-400 ms): The compressor releases more slowly, which can create a smoother, more controlled sound.
Example: For a ratio of 2:1 on a mix bus, a medium release (200-400 ms) might be used to ensure smooth and musical compression. For a snare drum with a ratio of 4:1, a fast release (50-100 ms) can help retain energy and impact.
Step 5: Set the Make-up Gain

After compression, the overall level of the signal may be reduced. Make-up gain brings the output volume level back up to match the input level, compensating for the gain reduction and ensuring consistent volume. When setting the make-up gain, you should rely on your ears rather than strictly matching the numerical dB reduction.
After applying compression, the track’s tonal balance and perceived loudness may change. Adjust the make-up gain until the compressed track has a similar perceived volume to the original, ensuring that you’re maintaining the overall balance of your mix.
Step 6: Fine-Tune and Listen
With the basic settings in place, the final step is fine-tuning the parameters while actively listening to the audio. This involves minor adjustments to the knee curve, ratio, threshold, attack, release, and make-up gain to ensure the compression achieves the desired effect.
The knee of a compressor determines how the compressor transitions from uncompressed to compressed signal as it reaches the threshold. A soft knee can be critical for smooth, transparent compression, while a hard knee is useful for more aggressive control.
Compare the compressed and uncompressed signals to ensure that the applied compression improves the sound without ruining it.
