  • Ratio: 4:1 or 6:1
  • Attack: Slow (around 6-7) to preserve punch and let transients breathe
  • Release: Fast (around 2-3) to ensure the groove stays tight and responsive
  • Gain Reduction: Aim for 2-4 dB on peaks
  • Distortion Modes: Dist 2 for added warmth, or Dist 3 for aggressive edge
  • Mix Control: Start at 50% for parallel-style glue, then adjust to taste

This setup encourages your kick and bass to move together rhythmically while maintaining their individual transients. The result feels polished and full without sounding overly processed.

Optional: Parallel Compression

If you want even more control or low-end thickness, create a parallel compression chain. Duplicate your Low-End Bus, apply aggressive drum compression, such as the UA 1176 (or any 1176 emulation) (e.g., a 20:1 ratio or use “all buttons” feature with fast attack and release), then blend it in subtly underneath the main signal.

This adds weight without over-compressing your original signal, helping your low end stay bold and consistent across playback systems.

After processing, always check your mix in mono. If the low end collapses or sounds weak, you may have phase issues. Try flipping the polarity or nudging the timing slightly until both elements sit correctly in mono.

Phase alignment is often what separates a tight mix from one that feels off, even when everything sounds fine in stereo.
