- Adds clarity if low rumble or very deep frequencies are muddying your mix.
Cons:
- Can reduce perceived weight and “oomph” in the kick or bass if you cut too high.
- Phase shift introduced by the filter, depending on its design (especially if steep slope) may reduce clarity at the cutoff region.

- To clean up inaudible low end (e.g. under ~30-40 Hz) that causes headroom waste.
- When there’s rumble, rumbling interference (e.g. air conditioner, subsonic noise).
- Before heavy limiting or mastering, to ensure clean headroom.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer; it depends on the track. But here are quick recommendations:
- For tracks with heavy low end (EDM, hip-hop, trap): use low shelf cuts or bell cuts to tame muddiness, plus a high-pass around 30-40 Hz if there’s rumble.
- For acoustic or band recordings: bell cuts to tame resonances, gentle shelves for warmth, avoid too high or steep high-pass that breaks bass body.
- For mastering scenarios: use shelf or bell subtly to clean up low mids, combined with a high-pass only if really necessary (and perhaps gently).
