• Toms: Similar to the snare but vary depending on size. Lower toms may have more weight in the 80 to 150 Hz range.
• Cymbals/Hi-Hats: Shine in the high frequencies, from 8 kHz and upwards.

Understanding these ranges will make the next steps more intuitive. Let’s start EQing to clean up, tighten, and enhance your drums for a punchy, professional sound.

1. Clean Up the Low-End (Kick and Toms)

Drums can easily get muddy if you don’t handle the low-end carefully. FabFilter Pro-Q3 gives you a real-time spectrum analyzer to see where the mud lives and eliminate it.

How To:

• Use a low-cut filter (around 30 to 40 Hz) to remove unnecessary sub-bass that doesn’t contribute to the punch of your kick or toms. This helps free up headroom.
• If you need more punch in your kick, give a gentle boost around 100 Hz. But be careful boosting too much, and the kick can start to dominate the mix.
• For toms, I like to cut a bit around 400 to 500 Hz to remove boxiness and help the toms “speak” better in the mix.

Pro Tip: Use Pro-Q3’s Dynamic EQ feature to control low-end build-up. This works wonders if you’ve got a kick drum that sounds good, but sometimes gets too boomy. Set a dynamic EQ around 50 to 80 Hz to control the volume only when it’s too much.

2. Add Body to the Snare

The snare is the heart of many drum tracks and needs to cut through the mix without sounding thin. This is where Pro-Q3 shines with its precision.

How To:

• First, I will cut with everything under 100-120hz; I don’t need those subsonic frequencies for the snare.
• Next, try boosting around 200 to 250 Hz for the body. You’ll notice the snare gets fuller but still stays clear.
• Add a slight boost around 3 to 5 kHz to give it that snap. This range is where a snare really “cracks” and becomes more present in the mix.

3. Tame Harsh Highs and Add Clarity to Cymbals

High frequencies can make or break your mix. Cymbals and hi-hats must be crisp but quickly become harsh if not appropriately treated.

How To:

• Use a high shelf boost at around 8 to 12 kHz for shimmer and air in the cymbals.
• If you’re getting harshness around 6 to 7 kHz, use Pro-Q3’s Dynamic EQ to tame it. This keeps the high-end under control without dulling your cymbals.

Dynamic EQ is the secret sauce here. Unlike static EQ, which can make the highs sound lifeless, dynamic EQ gives you control based on how loud those frequencies get, ensuring your cymbals stay bright but never harsh.

4. Mid-Side Processing for Stereo Width

One of the most underrated features in Pro-Q3 is its mid-side EQ. This is especially useful for drum overheads and room mics, adding width to your mix while keeping the kick and snare punchy in the center.

I recently worked on a rock track where the snare was getting buried in the chorus every time.
